The Short Mat season got under way with a Whistlestop at Eggborough in which Church Fenton A took the first Trophy of the season coming out winners by beating Eggborough on shots. Lets hope this is the way both teams continue.
Paul Williamson, David Edwards,Len Marshall and John Marshall with the Trophy
As yet another outdoor season draws to a close we lok back on our season. We started back in May with the Fours League with Church Fenton as runners up to SWMC. Our A team struggled and ended the Fours next to bottom of Division 2.
The Triples followed in June and Church Fenton had a reversal of last years fortunes finishing 2nd by half a point to North Duffield (it went to the last end). The A team had a hard season and finished bottom of Division 2.
York Mixed Triples League - This year we had to drop a team from this League due to a lack of players. Our team playing in Section 2 started the season well but eased up towards the end still finishing 2nd to North Duffield. This was enough to gain us promotion to Section 1 next season.
Overall it has been a good year, both Indoors and Outdoors and we are looking forward to the start of the new Short Mat season which gets underway in October.
The Short mat season has gone well again with the A team finishing in 4th place again in Div. 1 of the Fours Midweek League, the B team struggled this year and slipped to next to bottom in Div.2
In the Tuesday Triples we continue with 2 teams with Church Fenton 1 finishing 4th and Church Fenton 2 8th.
In the NYSMBA Championships the team of A & D Herbert and J & B Hunt finished as runners up. The Team of D Herbert, D Edwards and P Williamson were beaten at the Quarter Final stage but earned a place in the NESMBA Championships held at Barnard Castle.
It was a long day but our team finished as the NESMBA runners up, losing to a strong team from Stockport but still a proud day for the players and Church Fenton Club.
We start the Short Mat Leagues the first week in October, and so begin our first Short Mat practice night on Monday 19th.
In Division 1 Fenton started strongly with 2 wins and kept up the momentum throughout to finish as Champions winning the League by half a point from North Duffield. This is the first time that the Club has won a Selby League title since the Club started playing in 1989.
In the second division Fenton A struggled a little and finished in 6th place.
Our Ladies team finished their season in 4th place.
The York Private Clubs League saw Church Fenton finishing in 4th place in Section 2, and Church Fenton A 3rd in Section 3.
The Final of the Fletchers Trophy was held at Church Fenton again this year between SWMC and Riccall with SWMC running out as winners.

The Fours League finished in mid June with Church Fenton in 5th place in Division 1, while Church Fenton A finished 4th in Division 2. We now start the Triples League.
The outdoor season has started a week later this year to try to avoid the usual wet start, the Fours being the first competition.
Anne Herbert, Jean Hunt and David Herbert pose with Greg Harlow after losing in the final at Potters.
Time seems to fly these days and the end of the Short Mat season draws closer. The season so far has gone well for both the Church Fenton teams. In both cases our teams in the Midweek 4's Leagues are at present in 3rd position of their respective Leagues. If Church Fenton B can push on and at least gain second place and earn promotion we will have the prospect of Fenton A V Fenton B matches in League 1 next season.
The Tuesday Triples League also has both our Teams doing well, C. Fenton 1 being in 3rd place and C.Fenton 2 in 5th place. The Clubs progress in the Short Mat game continues to flourish.
Danny Langdon continues doing well in the Short Mat game having won the U18's North Yorkshire title for the 3rd consecutive year, he is now also established in the full England squad. Cameron Breeze has also done well being in the England U21 squad.
At the NYSMBA Championships held at Swinton D Herbert and D Langdon both qualified in the Singles for the NESMBA Championships to be held at Barnard Castle in March. Danny added the NYSMBA Singles Champion to his list of achievement's in qualifying which as well as playing at Barnard Castle means he will be representing North Yorkshire and Church Fenton in the National Championships in Derbyshire.
We had 2 Triples teams enter the NYSMBA Championships, L Marshall, J Marshall and P Williamson got to the last 16, but the team of D Herbert, D Edwards and D Skinner got to the quarter final stage.
Our Annual Christmas Craft and Gift Fair was held on the 1st November this year and continues to be a great success for both the stallholders, customers and for the Club itself. A lot of work is put in by members of the Committee and their many helpers which make the event the success it is. Most of the stallholders have said they wish to come again next year and we have a waiting list for tables so the future of the event looks secure.
The latest outdoor season is steadily coming to a close and we look forward to another Short Mat season. In the outdoor Selby Bowling Association Leagues Church Fenton playing in Division 1 finished 5th in the Fours League and 3rd in the Triples League, while Church Fenton A who play in League 2 unforunately finished next to last in both the Fours and the Triples. Our Ladies team had their best ever season finishing in 3rd place which was very satisfying as Linda Raggett was this years Ladies President. At the end of the season we held the Lady President's Day which was a great success.
In the York Private Club's Leagues Church Fenton won Section 2 and are promoted to Section 1 next year, but unfortunately Church Fenton A ended next to bottom and are relegated to Section 4. With Church Fenton winning Section 2 they were entered into the Champion of Champions competition. This year the Competition was held at Copmanthorpe Bowling Club. In the morning session Church Fenton came up against and lost to Wheldrake which ended their participation in the Competition. Next season the Champion of Champions Competition is to be hosted at Church Fenton.
In the Selby Bowling Associations Competitions held this year at Drax, Church Fenton played Drax B in the Final of the Fletchers Trophy and although gaining most shots in the match ended up losing due to the 15 shot handicap we had.
Gordon Raggett and David Herbert played in the Final of the Pairs Competition but were runners up to a Pair from Selby Bowling Club, but in a turnaround in the Triples Final Gordon, David and Paul Williamson were triumphant.
As we move towards the end of the Short Mat season the Club teams have both done well. In the 1st division of the Midweek 4's League our 'A' team are in 2nd position and only 3 points behind the leaders. The 'B' team who are playing in the 2nd division under the Captaincy of Simon Breeze have had some good results recently and are now in 3rd place and are pushing for promotion, which is excellent for their first season. The 'B' team are also still in the Tate & Lyle Cup competition and are due to play North Duffield 'A' at Riccall on the 7th March, good luck to them.
In the Tuesday Triples League Church Fenton 1 are in the top spot at the moment on the same points as East Cottingwith but with only 3 matches remaining they have a comfortable 45 shots advantage so only need to win their remaining matches to be crowned Champions. Church Fenton 2 who only came into the League this season have progressed well and are in 10th position.
In the North Yorkshire Championships we have several players qualifying for the North of England Championships to be held at Barnard Castle in March. G Raggett and D Herbert will play in the Singles, J Marshall and P Williamson are in the Pairs and G Raggett, D Herbert and D Langdon play in the Triples.
In the National Competitions D & A Herbert and G & L Raggett will be playing in the Mixed 4's Competition. D Langdon will once again be playing in the U18's Competition.
November 3rd saw us hold our second Christmas Craft and Gift Fair. Once again, despite the weather it proved to be a very successful event with visitors in larger numbers than last year. All the stallholders there were pleased with the event and have said they want to return next year.
The Short Mat season is now well under way. Church Fenton 'A' our team in division 1 of the Midweek 4's League is in 3rd position and Church Fenton 'B', our new team in division 2 are finding their feet and are currently in 10th position.
In the Tuesday Triples League Church Fenton 1 (A) and Church Fenton 2 (B) are in 1st and 3rd positions respectively.
As we come towards the end of the outdoor season the membership are looking forward to the start of the Short Mat season. Due to the interest in Short Mat bowling it was decided to apply to the Selby SMBA at their AGM for Church Fenton to enter a second team into both the Midweek 4's League and the Tuesday Triples League. Our application was accepted at the AGM on the 1st August. Practice and Social bowling will start on Monday 9th September with the first Midweek 4's League matches in week commencing Monday 30th September. The Triples League at Bubwith starts on Tuesday October 8th.
The Club are intending to hold Short Mat Club competitions in Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours during the season.
March has been a busy month for the Club. Six of our players travelled to Potters in Norfolk to take part in their Short Mat Competition. There are players from all over the country taking part, but our team of G & L Raggett and D Herbert finished the week crowned as Potters Triples Champions 2013.
In the Selby Short Mat League season Church Fenton finished in 4th place in both the midweek 4s League and the Tuesday Triples League.
At the North of England Championships (16th and 17th March) held at Barnard Castle D Herbert played in the Singles on the Saturday and lost in the Quarter Finals. On the Sunday we had D Herbert and G Raggett playing in the Pairs and G Raggett, D Langdon and D Herbert in the Triples. Both teams were going well but eventually fell at the Semi-Final stage in both events.
On Sunday 24th March Danny Langdon travelled to Bromsgrove to take part in the U18s National Championships. Danny progressed well eventually getting to the Final and just losing out to a player who had the week before won the British Isles Singles Championship. The progress both the Church Fenton Club and all the players have shown over the last 3 seasons bodes well for the Club's future and justifies our decision to extend the Clubhouse to accommodate 2 Short Mats.
G Raggett, L Raggett & D Herbert Potters Champions 2013 D Langdon with the National Championships U18's Runner-up Trophy
We are now well into the new year and heading towards the final stages of the Short Mat season. In both of the Leagues we continue to do well, being in 4th place in the midweek4's League and 5th in the Tuesday League. We won our Cup quarter final against Sutton on Derwent and now face North Duffield A in the semi final to be held at Riccall.
In the North Yorkshire Championships, having finished in 3rd place of the Triples, the team of G Raggett, D Herbert and D Langdon have qualified for a place in the North of England Championships, D Herbert also qualified for the Singles Competition. These Competitions will be held at Barnard Castle in March.
Last Saturday the 9th February D Langdon from Church Fenton (who is 15 and in only his 3rd season Short Mat Bowling), competed in the North Yorkshire U18's competition and ended the day as North Yorkshire U18 Champion. We are all proud of the progress Danny has made and this victory earns him the chance to compete in the U18's National Championships in March.
This coming weekend 16th & 17th February the NYSMBA are playing host to the full English Short Mat team. Church Fenton have a 4's team of D Herbert, D Langdon and S & C Breeze playing on the Saturday, lets hope we can give them a good game. G Raggett and D Langdon will also be playing on the Sunday.
As Christmas approaches we have reached the halfway stage in the Short Mat fixtures, and at this point we are in 2nd position in the League. We have also progressed to the quarter final stage of the Tate & Lyle Cup competition and have a home tie against Sutton on Derwent next. In the Tuesday Triples league we are in 6th place.
This time of year is very busy in the Short Mat calendar with all the NYSMBA County Championships competitions taking place. As a Club we have representatives in all the disciplines. The Pairs Competition took place on the 1st December at Swinton, we had 3 pairs taking part with G Raggett and D Herbert finishing in 3rd place, this qualifies them for the Northern Championships at Barnard Castle in March. The Fours Competition was held on the 2nd December also at Swinton and the Mixed Fours on the 15th December at Easingwold. The team of Linda & Gordon Raggett and Anne & David Herbert progressed to the quarter final but were then knocked out. Our other team of Len, John, Marcia and Judy Marshall were knocked out in the Round Robin stage. We look forward to the Singles and Triples competitions which take place on Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th of January, followed by the restart of the Selby Leagues.
On Saturday 3rd November we held our Christmas Craft and Gift Fair. The Fair was well attended and had 18 stalls offering a varied selection of Gifts and Crafts. The feedback from the stallholders and visitors was very positive, with many asking if we would be holding it again next year. A reporter from the Selby Times was on hand taking photographs and we can expect an article in the Selby Times shortly. Below are a couple of our own photo's from the day.
In the Selby Short Mat Fours League Church Fenton have got of to a good start and are in 3rd position after playing 5 matches. Playing in our own Clubhouse has been a welcome change and is beneficial to visiting teams as we can now play on 2 mats and the finishing time is not too late.
In the Selby Tuesday Triples League we are also progressing well and are currently in second place, but it is early days.
Our Monday social/practice nights are proving very popular with an average of 24 people attending.
The Cub has organised a Christmas Craft & Gift Fair in the Clubhouse for Saturday the 3rd November from 10am until 3pm. There will be a wide selection of stalls selling Gifts & Crafts to help with your Christmas shopping.
There will also be a Tombola and Book stall, and refreshments will be available throughout the day.
Wednesday 3rd October saw the start of the Short Mat Selby Fours League and our first home match in the Clubhouse. The new playing surface was much appreciated by all the players and Church Fenton had an excellent start winning on both mats against Market Weighton A. Our next match is away at Sutton on Derwent.
The Bowls 4 Free event finished yesterday (23rd September) and was a great success. we have managed to enrol 7 new members to the Short Mat section, and 2 of those have said they wish to join, to play outdoors next season. We also have interest from a further 2 players in playing Short Mat.
Our Monday Social Bowling has now started and in future we will begin at 6-30pm.
The Selby Midweek 4's League will be starting week commencing 1st October, and we will be playing our home fixtures on a Wednesday evening. Visitors and supporters are always welcome.
The 2 photo's below are of our Clubhouse set up for the Bowls 4 Free event last Saturday 1st September.
The first of the Saturday mornings was well attended and the initial feedback suggests that we could get at least 2 new members for the outdoor, and 4 new members for the Short Mat. This is an excellent start and the trend will hopefully continue over the next 3 weeks.
BOWLS 4 FREE
In conjunction with The Bowls Development Alliance, Church Fenton Bowling Club are to hold a Bowls 4Free event in September.
This will consist of the Club advertising the event as an opportunity for anyone to visit the Club and try Outdoor Flat Green and Indoor Short Mat Bowling, 4free.
The event will be held on 4 consecutive Saturday mornings for 2 hours from 10am, starting on Saturday the 1st September.
August 12th The Fletchers Trophy Final
This years Fletchers Trophy Final was held at Eggborough Bowling Club, and was a contest between Church Fenton and Cawood.
Church Fenton Rink 2 skipped by D Herbert was very close contest until the middle of the match when Church Fenton pulled away and won their rink with a score of 21 - 10.
Church Fenton Rink 4 skipped by G Raggett came from behind and made up a large deficit to win their rink 28 - 18.
This was the second time Church Fenton have won the trophy the first occasion being in 2007.
Many thanks to Eggborough Bowling Club for hosting the match and providing refreshments at the end, and also Tom Hillbeck for acting as umpire and D Badby the Selby Competition Secretary.

The new season has started but the opening Presidents match, due to be played at Church Fenton, had to be cancelled because of torrential rain.
On the building front, progress continues (see photo's below) and we can now use the main room although the final touches still remain.
28th April 2012
In the Selby and District Short Mat Leagues, our Short Mat team finished 5th in Division 1 of the Fours league and 6th in the Tuesday Triples League, which is quite an achievement for a relatively new team. We look forward to the coming September when we will have the benefit of playing in our own Clubhouse.
The work on the Clubhouse extension continues well, as can be seen from the picture below, the plastering should be finished this week.
Progress on the Clubhouse extension has gone very well, we started in May 2011 and by the time we got to Christmas we had the shell of the building complete and waterproof. It is our intention to have everything complete and ready for the start of the next Short Mat season.
The picture below shows the day we started construction, and the second picture as we are today

Our planning application to Selby District Council has now been approved. Our next hurdle is to get Building Regulation approval and then a serious effort will be needed to raise funds.
In the Selby Short Mat League we are progressing well having only lost 2 matches and are in second position in the League. If we can keep up the momentum we might be in the mix for a promotion place at the end of the season in March.
Our Club Presentation Night will be held at Dintingdales Restaurant, Scarthingwell Golf Club, at the end of January.
After having played 5 matches in the Selby Short Mat League we have managed to remain undefeated putting us among the leaders at this stage. We are playing in the Village Hall at the moment which restricts us to using 1 mat for League matches, as the floor slopes towards the corners. This is not ideal as it means visiting teams finish the matches late.
It is the intention of the Club Committee with the full backing of the membership to extend our existing Clubhouse so that we can accommodate 2 mats, and to this end we have put in a planning application to Selby Council, and we are hopeful of getting approval in December. If the approval is forthcoming we will have to start on serious fundraising program. Below you can see an image of the existing Clubhouse, with the second picture showing a representation of what the Clubhouse with the proposed extension would look like.
Church Fenton became a member of the NYSMBA when our application to join was unanimously accepted by representatives present at the meeting in September.
Our first competitive match was played on October 8th and finished with us gaining maximum points, so after the first match we are top of League 2. Lets hope we can continue and make a name for ourselves in the Short Mat world.
Our progress in the Short Mat League can be followed by clicking on the Leagues tab.
Church Fenton Bowling Club has decided to set up a Short Mat Section. Initially matches will be played in Church Fenton Village Hall, but we are hoping to extend our existing Clubhouse so that we can accommodate 2 short mats.
We have applied to the Selby Short Mat League and been accepted to play in the Evening Fours League and the Tuesday Triples League. The last hurdle to overcome is an application to register with the North Yorkshire Short Mat Bowling Association (NYSMBA) which will be heard at their meeting on September 17th.
York Private Clubs Mixed Triples Finals Day at Wetherby Bowling Club on Sunday 12th September 2010.
By winning Section 3 of this League we qualified for the Champion of Champion's Final. After winning all 3 rinks against North Duffield A in the morning we had to play Selby A in the Grand Final. Once again we had a convincing win with Church Fenton ahead on all 3 rinks.

Presentation Night 2007
The club's presentation night for the 2007 season took place at Scalm Park near Selby on Friday 25th January 2008. The event was very well attended, and the food was fantastic. Guest of honour for the evening was Mrs Paquita Bankes-Jones, wife of the much-missed Michael Bankes-Jones. Mrs Bankes-Jones presented the Michael Bankes-Jones trophy, awarded to the winner of a new competition held this year in Michael's memory.
Church Fenton represented at York Triples League "Champion of Champions" day
As winners of Section 5 of the York District Private Clubs League, Church Fenton provided a team for the "Champion of Champions" day, held on 9th September 2007 at Wigginton Bowling Club. A photo of the team from the day can be seen below, as can a photo of team captain Brian Hunt being presented with the winners' prize for section 5.
Summer 2007 - Church Fenton boating lake!
As we all know, Summer 2007 was a complete wash-out in the North of England. Although Church Fenton was nowhere near as badly affected as some parts of Yorkshire, a particularly heavy downpour managed to turn the bowling green into a temporary boating lake as can be seen from the pictures below. Luckily, due to the excellent drainage the green has, we were able to go ahead with a league match on the green only two days after these pictures were taken
2006 Presentation night
The Presentation Night for 2006's competitions was held at Scalm Park for the first time in January 2007. Previously held at the Half Moon Inn, Lennerton, the event was well attended and we are planning on returning for the next Presentation Night in January 2008.
