Selby Short Mat Leagues

Midweek Fours Once again the "A" team did well finishing in 3rd place to N Duffield and East Cottingworth, but the "B" struggled again finishing just above Riccall "B",next to bottom.

Tuesday Triples  Church Fenton 1 finished 4th and Church fenton 2 10th.

NYSMBA - In the Singles D. Edwards managed the last 16. The Fours were our best success with D Herbert, D Edwards, P Williamson and J Marshall reaching the semi-finals, and thereby qualifying for the Northern Championships at Barnard Castle.

NESMBA Championships (Barnard Castle) - Our eam of D Herbert, D Edwards, P Williamson and J Marshall had a good run in the Round Robin stage, progressing to the semi-final's beating teams from Derbyshire and West Yorkshire on the way, before losing to a team from Stockport.

Outdoor Bowling - In the Selby Fours League Church Fenton finished 3rd in Division 1, and Church Fenton A finished next to bottom in Division 2.

2017

Short Mat Bowling - We continue to make progress in the Short Mat game with the "A" team finishing 4th in the 1st Division of the Midweek Fours League, The "B" team were unfortunatly propping up the 2nd Division.  Church Fenton 1 finished 4th in the Tuesday Triples League, while Church Fenton 2 were in 8th.

NYSMBA Chapionships -The Mixed Fours team of D & A Herbert and B & J Hunt played well and were runners up. In the Triples Competition D Herbert, D Edwards and P Williamson reached the Quarter finals, and earned the chance to compete at Barnard Castle in the NESMBA Championships. The team gave an excellent performance and finished as Northern England runners up to a team from Stockport.

At the finish of the Outdoor season in August Church Fenton finished 2nd in both the Fours and Triples Leagues. Unforunatly our A team finished Next to bottom in the Fours, and in the bottom spot in the Triples.

York Mixed Triples League - Unfortunatly this season we had to drop a team due to lack of players but our team performed well and finished as runners up to North Duffield which will gain us promotion to Section 1 next season.

 2016

The Short Mat season finished in March with both the Church Fenton teams having a reasonable season. The team of D Edwards, D & A Herbert and P Williamson came runners up in the County Fours competition and represented the North Yorkshire in the Northern Championships at Barnard Castle.

In the Selby SM leagues Church Fenton A finished in 6th place in the 1st Division, and Church Fenton B in 4th place in Division 2. The Tuesday Triples League saw |Church Fenton 1 in 6th place and Church Fenton 2 in 12th.

The Outdoor season started a week later this year to try to avoid the worst of the early spring weather. the Fours leagues ended with Church Fenton in 5th place in Division 1 and Church Fenton A in 4th place in Division 2, their best position for several years.

The Selby Triples League started in mid June and finished with Church Fenton as winners of Division 1 by half a point over North Duffield. This is the first time Church Fenton have won a Selby League title (although we have been runners up on several occasions) since the Club was formed in 1986 a real reason to celebrate. Church Fenton B unforunately finished next to the bottom in Division 2.

Church Fenton Ladies who play in the Ladies Tuesday League finished their season in 4th place.

In the York Mixed Triples Leagues Church Fenton A finished their season in 4th place in Section 2, while Church Fenton B were a creditable 3rd in Section 3.

2015

In the Selby Bowling Association Finals we had some success with D Edwards and D Herbert winning the Pairs competition . Church Fenton were runners up with D Herbert, D Edwards and P Williamson playing in the Triples and P Williamson and        J deGraaf in the Mixed Pairs.

The end of the outdoor season is fast approaching with only our own internal Club competitions still to be completed, and the Champion of Champion's Final in the York Private Clubs League, which this year is being held at Church Fenton.

The outdoor season started with the Fours where Church Fenton A were 3rd in Div.1 and Church Fenton B were 6th in Div.2. In June we started playing Triples and with Fenton A finishing 4th in Div 1 with Fenton B once again finishing 6th in Div 2.

In the York Private Clubs League it was a mixed season, after their relegation to Section 4 last season Church Fenton A fought back and gained promotion back to Section 3 only missing out on the top spot by 1 point. In Section

1 Church Fenton were relegated after a poor end to their season.

At the end of the 2014/2015 Short Mat season our 2 teams both played well with the both the A Team and the B Team finishing 3rd in their repective Divisions. In the Tuesday Triples League Fenton 1 were runners up and Fenton 2 finished

in 7th place. Once again we had representatives from the Club playing in the Northern Championships at Barnard Castle.

Danny Langdon has now established himself in the full England squad and is a regular player.

 2014

We have just had the first games of the new Short Mat season and both teams have started well with wins, lets hope we can continue.

The outdoor season is over once again and our teams in the various Leagues have had a mixed season. In the Selby Fours League our team in the first Division finished in 5th place and managed to get to the Final of the Fletchers Trophy. The final was held at Drax and we had to play Drax B. In addition to them having home advantage we had a 15 point handicap to contend with. On the day Church Fenton won the game but lost the match when the 15 points were added to the Drax score.

Our B team had a less successful season season finishing next to bottom of Division 2 but continue to make progress.

In the York Private Clubs League it was another season of mixed results. The Church Fenton team in Section 2 ended the seasn as winners and are promoted to Section 1 next season, they also qualified for the Champion of Champions competition held at Copmanthorpe. Unfortunately we were knocked out in the morning session by Wheldrake.

Our other team in Section 3 had a less successful season and were relegated back to Section 4.

In the Selby Triples League Church Fenton finished in 3rd place in Division 1 and Church Fenton A in division 2 unfortunately again ended the season next to bottom.

Several members entered the Selby Bowling association Competitions, D Herbert and G Raggett got to the finals in the Pairs but were runners up. D Herbert, G Raggett and P Williamson also reached and won the Final of the Triples competition.

Church Fenton Ladies have had a really good season finishing in 3rd place which is the best finish since the team started playing. Linda Raggett was this years Lady President and the season was finished off with the Lady Presidents Day being held at Church Fenton. They held a Whistlestop and this was followed by a salad tea in the Clubhouse. The event was a great success, well done Linda and all the players of the Ladies team.

Our decision to enter a second team in the Selby Short Mat Leagues has been a good one as in the Fours League they performed well and just missed out on promotion to Div. 1 by 1 point. In the Tuesday Triples League they finished in a creditable 6th place.

Our first team also did well finishing in 3rd place in the Fours League and as runners up in the Tuesday Triples. Church Fenton are now one of the top Short Mat teams which is good considering we only took up the game 4 seasons ago.

2013

Both the Indoor Short Mat and the Outdoor Flat Green bowling seasons have been very successful for Church Fenton Bowling Club over the last year.

We ended the Short Mat season in March with our team finishing 4th in both the Selby Leagues we play in. Six of our players have been invited to play for the North Yorkshire County teams, Three will be playing with the 'A' team, and three will be joining the newly formed 'C' team. Danny Langdon has also been selected to play for the full England team.

Due to the support from within the Club for the Short Mat game we decided to apply to enter a second team in the Selby Leagues., and our application has been accepted.

Outdoors we have had successes and failures in the Leagues. In the Selby Leagues our Church Fenton Men's team continue to challenge the top teams in Div. 1, finishing in 3rd spot in the Triples League and 4th in the Fours League.

Our 'A' team has again been struggling in Div. 2. finishing next to last in both Leagues.

The Ladies team has had a tough season but continues to make progress under the supervision of the shared Captaincy of Jacqueline deGraaf and Linda Raggett. Linda takes over as President of the Selby Ladies League next season.

In the York Mixed Triples League our Church Fenton 'A' team won Section 4 and played in the Champion of Champions competition, but lost in the semi-final. Unfortunately the Church Fenton team in Section 1 was relegated to Section 2 after finishing next to bottom.

For the first time 4 players from the Club (Gordon and Linda Raggett and Anne and David Herbert) entered the York Open Bowling Competition. Both of the pairings in the Mixed Pairs unfortunately bowed out in the second round, but David and Gordon progressed to the semi-final stage in the Men's Pairs. It was a good showing for the Club as players of a high standard travel from around the country to take part in the Competition.

2012

An excellent year for Church Fenton Bowling Club.

In the Short Mat season we finished 5th in the 1st division of the Selby and District Short Mat League after gaining promotion last year. The Tuesday afternoon Triples League saw us drop to 6th, but still very respectable.

The Short Mat Cup Competition went well, where we reached the semi-final stage, only to be beaten by the eventual winners Selby WMC.

The new Short Mat season starts in October which will see us having the benefit of playing in our own now completed Clubhouse extension.

After their promotion to Div 1 of the Selby Fours League the Church Fenton team performed extremely well in finishing runners up position, unfortunately the Church Fenton A team finished in next to bottom spot in Div 2.

In the Selby Triples League Church Fenton again finished in 4th spot of Div 1, and Church Fenton A were sadly at the bottom of Div 2.

This year it was the Church Fenton team that progressed to the final of the Fletchers Trophy and after a close contest to start with, eventually ran out convincing winners over local rivals Cawood.

Our Ladies team in the Selby Ladies Tuesday League continue to make good progress under their new captaincy, and finished in 6th position on the same points as the team above them but having a worse score difference.

The York mixed Triples League saw us enter a 2nd team (Church Fenton A) into the League and they started in Section 5 and managed to gain promotion to Section 4 next season by finishing as runners up, losing out by having a shot difference of only 3 to the winners Nestle Rowntree B. Very well done to all who played in this team.

Following their promotion to Section 1 last season Church Fenton had a good season consolidating their position and finishing 4th, well done to all.

2011

Once again the Club has had a good year.

We started playing Short Mat Bowls for the first time at the end of the 2010 outdoor season, and despite being a new team, entered the Selby and District Short Mat Bowling League (Div 2) and the Selby Tuesday Afternoon Short Mat Triples League. Although most of our players were new to the Short Mat format we performed well and finished 2nd in Div 2 and gained promotion to Div 1 next season. In the Tuesday Triples League the team finished in 5th spot out of 20 teams which is excellent for a new team.

By entering the Short Mat Leagues we were automatically entered into the Cup competition, and progressed through to the Final and finished runners up.

Well done to all who played in the Short Mat, who knows how far we could go.

Both Church Fenton teams started this season in Div 2 of the Fours League, by the end of this League Church Fenton managed to finish as Champions and Church Fenton A finished in 5th position.

After their promotion last season Church Fenton started their campaign in the Triples League in Div 1 and finished in a creditable 4th spot. Meanwhile Church Fenton A were fighting it out in Div 2. and eventually finish in 7th position.

Church Fenton A had a magnificent run in the Fletchers Trophy getting to the final and only losing out to North Duffield by 2 shots.

Once again our team in the York Mixed Triples League have had a good season. Having been promoted last season to Section 2 they have fought their way into 2nd spot gaining promotion and will be in Section 1, amongst the big boys next season.

Our Ladies Team have struggled again this season in the Selby Ladies League finishing in the bottom spot.

2010

A very good season for Church Fenton Bowling Club.

In the Selby Fours League, Church Fenton finished in 4th position following their relegation to the second division. Unfortunately our other Men's team Church Fenton  B.G. finished at the bottom. The Selby Triples League finished with Church Fenton in the top position and gaining promotion, with Church Fenton B.G. finishing in sixth position.

Unfortunately our Ladies team finished bottom of the league, but went out in a blaze of glory by beating the runners up North Duffield in their final re-arranged match.

Following the consolidation of our position in Section 3 of the York Mixed Triples League last season we pushed on and finished top this year, and are promoted to Section 2 next season.

We had another good run in the Knockout Cup Competition losing out to Stamford Bridge A in the quarter finals who went on to win the Cup.

As we won Section 3 in the York League we were entered into the Champion of Champions Competition held at Wetherby Bowling Club. Our first round draw brought us up against the winners of Section 1, North Duffield A but we overcame them winning all 3 rinks and had to play the winners of Section 2 in the Final. Once again we overcame opposition from a higher section winning all 3 rinks again and were crowned Champion of Champion's.

On a more individual level we had a very good season with our entries into the Selby Bowling Association Competitions. D Herbert won the Men's Merit Singles Competition beating last year's winner.

G. Raggett, D. Herbert, B. Hunt (N. Langdon) and C. Cook had a good win in the Fours competition beating a team from North Duffield that contained 2 Junior England players.

In the Final of the Mixed Doubles competition G. & L. Raggett finished as runners up, but overall it has been a very good season for Church Fenton Bowling Club.

2009

Not quite the the success this year as in the past 2 seasons.

Church Fenton Men's team were unfortunately relegated to the 2nd division in both the Fours and the Triples Leagues. Church Fenton BG struggled in the Fours League but put up a great challenge in the Triples League just missing promotion by finishing in 4th position. At least we will be playing each other this coming season and these matches are always very keen.

The Ladies team had another good season and finished mid table.

We managed to finish in 3rd place in the York Mixed Triples League, just missing out on promotion when we lost in the last match of the season. In the York Knockout Cup Competition we were knocked out in the quarter finals, but overall it was a good season.

2008

Another successful season for Church Fenton Bowling Club.

The Church Fenton Men's team finished a very creditable 4th in the Fours League and in 5th place in the Triples League. Unfortunately Church Fenton BG (British Gypsum) our other men's team have been struggling due to a lack of players and finished 3rd from bottom in Div 2 of the Fours League and next to bottom in Div 2 of the Triples League.

The Church Fenton Ladies Team finished their league in 5th position which is their best position so far.

In the York Mixed Triples League Church Fenton were once again successful finishing in top spot to gain promotion to Section 3. Unfortunately in the preliminary round of the Champion of Champions Competition we were drawn against the winners of Section 1, but went down fighting and only lost the match by 3 shots. It was a similar position in the York Knockout Cup Competition as we had to play another team from Section 1 and again only lost the match by 3 shots. Both these results show we are not far behind the top teams and have nothing to fear as we continue to progress in this League.

2007

Church Fenton men were very successful and as a result:

The Church Fenton team in the York mixed clubs private league came top of league 5 and were promoted to division 4 for 2008.

Church Fenton Bowling Club is always looking for new members and if anyone is interested in joining please get in touch via the contacts page.
